  2. == Information for installing GMT 5 ==
  3. Note: The build system has recently been switched to CMake which is a
  4. cross-platform system for managing the build process. If you are familiar
  5. with the old GNU Build Tools (automake, autoconf, and configure) you can
  6. probably skip over to the CMake quick start guide in README.CMake.
  7. Introduction
  8. ------------
  9. You do not need to read these instructions unless you plan to build and
  10. install the programs manually.
  11. GMT has been installed successfully under UNIX/Linux/OS X on workstations. It
  12. also installs under Windows and in UNIX emulators such as Cygwin or on virtual
  13. machines. We anticipate few problems if you are installing the package on
  14. other platforms.
  15. Note there are three GMT tar archives available (#3 is optional):
  16. 1. gmt-5.x.x.tar.bz2: The GMT 5 distribution
  17. 2. gshhg-gmt-2.x.x.tar.gz: All five resolutions of GSHHG coastline data
  18. 3. dcw-gmt-1.x.x.tar.bz2: Digital Chart of the World polygon data
  19. The archives are available in bzip2 (*.bz2) and gzip (*.gz) formats.
  20. If you do not have bzip2 installed you can obtain source or executables
  21. from http://www.bzip.org.
  22. For Windows users there are separate Windows installers available; this
  23. discussion only considers UNIX/Linux/OS X installations. Windows users who
  24. which to build GMT from the sources refer to README.WIN32.
  25. CMake
  26. -----
  27. Install CMake (>=2.8.5) from http://www.cmake.org/cmake/resources/software.html
  28. Install netCDF library
  29. ----------------------
  30. For all major Linux distributions there are prepackaged development binaries
  31. available. netCDF is also available on MacOSX trough the macports and fink
  32. package managers.
  33. Otherwise, get netCDF from http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/downloads/netcdf/.
  34. You need at least version 4.0 with netCDF-4/HDF5 data model support (do not
  35. disable HDF5/ZLIB in netCDF with --disable-netcdf-4).
  36. GDAL (optional)
  37. ---------------
  38. To use the GDAL interface (ability to provide grids or images to be imported
  39. via gdal) you must have the GDAL library and include files installed. Like
  40. netCDF, GDAL is available through your favorite package manager on many *NIX
  41. systems.
  42. PCRE (optional)
  43. ---------------
  44. To use the PCRE interface (ability to specify regular expressions in some
  45. search options, e.g., gmtconvert) you must have the PCRE library and include
  46. files installed. PCRE is available through your favorite package manager
  47. on many *NIX systems.
  48. LAPACK (optional)
  49. ---------------
  50. To greatly speed up some linear algebra calculations (greenspline in
  51. particular) you must have the LAPACK library and include files installed.
  52. LAPACK is available through your favorite package manager on many *NIX
  53. systems or in the case of OS X is built in.
  54. Install support data
  55. --------------------
  56. You can obtain GMT from http://gmt.soest.hawaii.edu/. Alternatively you may
  57. get GMT from any of the following FTP sites. Try the site that is closest to
  58. you to minimize transmission times:

  70. The development sources are available from the subversion repository at
  71. svn://gmtserver.soest.hawaii.edu/gmt5/trunk
  72. Extract the files and put them in a separate directory (need not be
  73. where you eventually want to install GMT).
  74. Configuring
  75. -----------
  76. GMT can be build on any platform supported by CMake. CMake is a
  77. cross-platform, open-source system for managing the build process.
  78. Refer to README.CMake for further details. In the source tree copy
  79. cmake/ConfigUserTemplate.cmake to cmake/ConfigUser.cmake and edit
  80. the file according to your demands.
  81. By default, GMT will use Dave Watson's Delaunay triangulation routine.
  82. However, a much faster alternative is available from Jonathan Shewchuk, but
  83. his routine is not distributed under the GNU Public License. If you work for
  84. a for-profit organization you should read Shewchuk's copyright statement (in
  85. src/triangle.c) first. If you agree with the license terms you can enable
  86. Shewchuk's triangulation routine in cmake/ConfigUser.cmake.
  87. At run-time, GMT will initialize all default variables by reading the
  88. share/gmt.conf. Although strongly discouraged, if you want to make permanent
  89. changes to some of the defaults you can edit the share/gmt.conf file directly.
  90. A much better approach is to create a gmt.conf file in your home directory
  91. and edit those settings since GMT will check for that file before loading
  92. system defaults (actually, it will first look in the current directory, then
  93. the home directory, and then finally in share). See the gmt.conf man page
  94. for a description of all defaults.
  95. To prevent two GMT processes writing to the same gmt.conf file simultaneously
  96. (thereby corrupting it), GMT can implement the POSIX advisory file locking
  97. scheme and sets and releases locks on these files. This might not be reliable
  98. when the files reside in directories on network filesystems, such as NFS.
  99. Whether flock works on network filesystems is implementation dependent. If
  100. you want to activate file locking you may enable it in cmake/ConfigUser.cmake.
  101. By default, both GMT and all its supplements are built. You can turn
  102. off all supplements via the BUILD_SUPPLEMENTS setting in ConfigUsers.cmake
  103. The top-level installation directory is configured with the variable
  104. CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX.
  105. Now that you made your configuration choices it is time for invoking CMake.
  106. Create a subdirectory where the build files will be generated, e.g., in the
  107. source tree 'mkdir build'.
  108. In the build subdirectory, type
  109. cmake [options] ..
  110. Append any of the options explained above as you see fit. If CMake cannot
  111. figure out all the dependent libraries or required compiler and linker flags
  112. it will give you a message and you will be asked to edit
  113. cmake/ConfigUser.cmake.
  114. Build GMT
  115. ---------
  116. In the build directory, type
  117. make
  118. which will compile all the programs. After a successful compilation you may
  119. install the executables in the designated bin directory with the command
  120. make install
  121. After a successful install you can have the object files and the local
  122. executables removed by saying
  123. make clean
  124. or just remove the entire build directory.
  125. Documentation
  126. _____________
  127. The documentation is available online at http://gmt.soest.hawaii.edu/
  128. or as platform independent package that you can install along with GMT.
  129. The GMT documentation includes HTML files for online browsing, user guide,
  130. cookbook, and manual pages. The Documentation also contains the
  131. GMT_Tutorial.pdf file which is a short course in how to use GMT. It can be
  132. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
  133. still missing!
  134. followed individually or in a lab setting by a group of users.
  135. The development sources from subversion do not contain the precompiled
  136. documentation. The manuals, HTML pages, and PDFs have to be created from
  137. source with Sphinx (see README.CMake).
  138. Set path
  139. --------
  140. Make sure users set their PATH to include the directory containing
  141. the GMT executables (BINDIR) if this is not a standard directory
  142. like /usr/local/bin. You should now be able to run GMT programs.
  143. GMT supplemental Code
  144. ---------------------
  145. GMT users elsewhere have developed programs that utilize the GMT libraries and
  146. produce PostScript code compatible with the rest of GMT or simply perform data
  147. manipulation. In addition, misc. code developed by us depend on GMT
  148. libraries. Currently, the supplemental archive include the directories:
  149. gshhg - Data extractor for GSHHG shoreline polygons and rivers, borders.
  150. img - Data extractor for Smith/Sandwell altimetry grids.
  151. meca - Plotting of focal mechanisms, velocity arrows,
  152. and error ellipses on maps.
  153. mgd77 - Programs for handling of native MGD77 files.
  154. misc - dimfilter
  155. potential - geopotential manipulations
  156. segyprogs - Plotting SEGY seismic data sets.
  157. spotter - Plate tectonic & kinematics applications.
  158. x2sys - Track intersection (crossover) tools.
  159. Misc
  160. ----
  161. Before running programs, there are a few things you should do/know:
  162. - Read carefully the documentation for the gmt system. This can be
  163. found as both PDF and HTML files in the doc/pdf|html directories.
  164. The successful operation of gmt-programs depends directly on your
  165. understanding of how gmt "works", its option lists, I/O, and composite
  166. plot mechanisms. Then, before running individual gmt programs, read
  167. the associated man page.
  168. A reminder
  169. ----------

  175. Software support
  176. ----------------
  177. You haven't bought anything so you cannot expect full service. However, if
  178. you find a bug in any of the programs, please report it to us
  179. (http://gmt.soest.hawaii.edu/) rather than trying to fix it yourself so that
  180. we, and through us, other users may benefit from your find. Make sure you
  181. provide us with enough information so that we can recreate the problem.
  182. In addition to the bug tracking feature (New Issues) on the website, you
  183. can also post general questions on the GMT user forum. Note that registration
  184. is required to post on the site.
  185. Ordering the GMT package on CD/DVD-Rs
  186. -------------------------------------
